Qatar airways is a world leader in the service they provide both on the ground and in the air. Adding to this are the market busting premium class sales they are known to offer from time to time particularly if you’re able to accommodate a flight that starts somewhere like Amsterdam or Oslo.
These have also been incredibly good value in attaining Gold/Silver status with OneWorld’s frequent flyer program. It’s actually what helped me secure Gold Status in recent months.
This is because each leg will earn you a nifty 140 Tier Points per sector if flying in Business Class (Generally J/I selling class). A round trip to Asia quickly nets you 560TP’s giving much preferred earning rates compared to other one world carriers like British Airways to Malaysian Airlines where you’d earn 280TP return from LHR to KUL in Business, whilst hitting your bank balance harder in the process.
That being said, there’s a little uncertainty in the frequent flyer world since the introduction of the ‘R’ class fare. These are the lowest fare buckets available from Qatar and it’s being reported that they are not Tier Point or Avios earning fares. This isnt a ‘new’ class as such, although it’s the first time we’ve seen it being widely used in conjunction with a discounted flights from Norway (Update to follow!)
We will be watching this closely in the coming weeks, especially during the next Qatar premium sale!
